My two older kids (kindergarten and second grade) have a homeschool project night on Monday. Trying to think of a project for a kindergartner has been stressing me out – I don’t want to DO the project for him, but what do you do with a Kindergartner?

After thinking about it for a while, I came up with an idea! Using one of our favorite Dr. Seuss books for inspiration, we created a display board with pictures from our Spring Break trip to Florida.

To get my kindergartner to buy into the project, the first thing we did was pick out pictures – no easy task since I have over 700 pictures of our two week road trip to Florida.

It took him about an hour to narrow it down to 50 and we uploaded to them to the one hour photo service at Walgreens. After coupon, the 50 pictures cost $5! Score.

Then we headed to Walmart to grab our supplies:

• Elmer’s Display Board
• Glitter 3D Paints
• Adhesive Square Stickers
• Acid Free Glue
• Pre-cut Letters
• Fun Stickers

I had a hard time choosing the display board. First, I had a smaller, white board in the cart. My wise husband suggested the bigger, black board.

I’m glad he did, because as it ended up, we still couldn’t fit everything on the BIGGER board. The small board would have been a disaster.

We schooled in the car on the way to and from Walmart. I joke that a lot of our schooling happens in the car for the simple fact that we talk. A. LOT.

On the ride we discussed the words that begin with F – Florida, Fun, Family, Friends, Flora, Fauna. Once we got home, I wrote the words on pieces of paper and the kids separated the pictures into categories.

Then we started putting the board together.

I’m glad we bought the pre-cut letters. They sped up the process quite a bit. The adhesive squares were also really nice – they stuck firmly and are keeping the pictures in place.

The next to last step was embellishing the board with fun stickers. The kids enjoyed this the most and my husband ended up with a sticker bikini in one of the pictures. He hasn’t noticed that yet…

The very last thing we did was use the 3D Glitter Glue to make our Fs. I think I’m going to have do a little work to make them Pop a bit better. They are 3D, but on the black board, they don’t stand out very well.

And unfortunately, when I stood the board up and put it out of the way so the two younger kiddos and the cats wouldn’t destroy it, the letters ran a bit. I’ve cleaned them up some, but I need to do a bit more work.

Over all, I think the final project turned out very nice. It was hard for me to stand back and let the kids do their thing – but I did. And they enjoyed the process. The Elmer’s supplies made the job pretty easy and the kids LOVED the Glue ‘n Glitter. It’s already all gone.
