I love Tropical Traditions! They recently sent me a gallon of their Organic Palm Shortening to try which I was really excited about. I have always had Crisco shortening in my home until recently when I started to get picky about what I’ll cook with. It has become more important to me to cook with healthy products and hydrogenated oils are now banned from my house.
I was sad to give up the Crisco – it really did come in handy in certain applications, like pie crusts, which is why I was very excited to try this product out. I’ve been using Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening for several weeks now. I’m most impressed that it’s NOT HYDROGENATED and contains ZERO TRANS FATS! Its melting point is 97 degrees and it’s very shelf stable so I don’t have to worry about it going rancid.
To put it to the test, I used it in a lot of my baking. I made banana muffins, buttermilk pancakes, and waffles. I was impressed with each of the recipes. I didn’t really notice much of a difference between the palm shortening and other {non coco-nutty} oils. And that’s a great thing! While I love their Virgin Coconut Oil, sometimes I really want a product with less of a coconut flavor. And this palm shortening fits the bill. The only complaint I have is that I have to melt it when I need liquid oil. But what do you do?
But best of all, Tropical Traditions Palm Shortening is really reasonably priced!! It’s much cheaper than the Virgin Coconut Oil. Non hydrogenated, zero trans fat, very reasonable price. Win-win-win!!
I also love that Tropical Traditions Organic Plam Shortening is sourced from ECO FRIENDLY, SUSTAINABLE, small scale family farms in South America. Tropical Traditions says their farmers are “certified by ProForest, which ensures that they meet strict social, environmental and technical criteria. With regard to environmental criteria, the assessments are carried out at the landscape and operational level at both the farms and processing facilities. These assessments cover environmental impact on the soil, water, air, biodiversity and local communities. The lands the farmers use are not lands that were deforested. The lands used to grow the palm fruit are lands previously used for agricultural purposes (cattle, rice, banana).” I’m glad to know that my coconut oil habit is not contributing to deforestation!
My final word: Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Oil- is a keeper! If you’re curious how to use Coconut oil, check out the hundreds of uses listed here. And if you need to know what Virgin Coconut oil is, check here!
If you’d like to get your own, Tropical Traditions has a
