I’m not really a dieter. I consider myself pretty lucky to be able to eat most anything in moderation and still maintain a decent body weight. And I really don’t like the word diet or all of the emphasis in this country on dieting. I think a healthier outlook on eating and body image would do the U.S. a lot of good. I grew up in Germany where most women didn’t diet either. What they did seem to do: cook together, eat real food, and linger at the table.
Well…I know that reality is a little different here in the U.S. so I was excited to see a new book by Jennifer Tuma-Young called Balance Your Life, Balance the Scale: Ditch Dieting, Amp Up Your Energy, Feel Amazing, and Release the Weight – a book about losing weight without resorting to diets.
Jennifer Tuma-Young is a recovered yo-yo dieter and inspired weight loss expert. She’s developed a B.A.L.A.N.C.E. program to help women pay attention to their own needs. She thinks {and I agree} that paying attention to our own needs and freeing up our own time “lifts us up, and makes life easier.” I love her flower – it shows a lot of the bigger problems – areas of our lives that often get us down, stress us out, and contribute to eating problems.
I’m excited to see a dieting book that gets to the heart of the matter and takes the emphasis off food. Yes, we need to eat healthy. Yes, we should avoid bad ingredients and focus on real food. And yes, we need to cleanse and detoxify. BUT – we women can be really hard on ourselves. I beat myself up all the time for every little thing, and I know I’m not alone. Even though I don’t diet, I need to read books every now and again that remind me to find some way to put myself first. Because I am really bad at putting myself first. And if Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. My grandma had a sign with that in her kitchen and it’s so applicable to my own life.
If you’re looking for a book that encourages a healthy lifestyle so you can maintain a healthy weight, I recommend that you check out this book. If you would like more information on Tuma-Young’s book – head on over to her website.
