Did you know you can freeze avocados?  The idea never really dawned on me until a friend told me she bought 40 avocados when they cost 49 cents each a while back and froze them {Thanks, Amy}. I put that tidbit of information in the back of my head and decided to wait until avocados were on sale in my area.

Since I love to keep my grocery budget low the idea really appealed to me because we LOVE avocados. I used to buy pre-made guacamole {there were some crazy coupon deals a couple years ago that netted me a bunch of bags of the stuff for free} and I successfully froze it. I didn’t think the guac tasted great for chips and margaritas, but for putting inside my burrito, I thought it was just fine.

So I decided to give it a shot. Last week (and still this week), avocados are 49 cents each at my local Aldi. So I bought 20. I had to price-match at Walmart because Aldi was out. 49 cents for an avocado is crazy cheap – I guess they were the hot ticket item at Aldi last week!

I googled “how to freeze avocados” and found this. And then, I followed their instructions.

First, I cut the avocados in half and scooped out the “meat.” I love my Pampered Chef Avocado Peeler. Seriously. I was skeptical when I ordered this thing, but it is awesome. It slices through the outside of the avocado to cut it in half and then also slides easily around the inside to get all of the meat out.

Then, working with three avocados at a time, I added 1 TBS lime juice concentrate (to stop the oxidation process and keep them from turning brown) and pureed the lot in my Cuisinart Food Processor. Man, I love that machine!

Then, I bagged everything up and went on to the next batch. I made 4 bags with 3 avocados and 1 bag with 4. Then I whipped up a huge batch of guacamole to eat. Yum.

I’m sure guacamole made with frozen avocados will not be as good as fresh guac, but it’s got to be better than the pre-made stuff I used to buy and freeze, right? UPDATE: My bags of avocado have been in my freezer almost one week now and have not turned brown.

      The Hass website doesn’t recommend it, but you may get away with it as you put some citric acid on it to keep it from turning brown? Let me know if you try!

    I had found a pin on pinterest about freezing them whole, and squirting them with lemon juice before freezing, which I did. They are still green in the freezer.

    But I’d like to go get more avocados and process them like you did. :)

    Thanks for this! I’ve never seen avocados for quite that low – or at least it’s rare – around here, but they have gone down as far as $0.69ea. And my boys eat avocado like it’s going out of style! I’ll definitely have to try this. I will say that I’ve frozen homemade guacamole, and it doesn’t turn brown in the freezer, but you have to eat it right away when you thaw it. It browns quite quickly after that.

    OH, I like avocado. I like to add about a third of a mashed avocado into my soups. It’s good for me fat…and I just like avocadoes :) :) Thanks for the tip on how to freeze them :) Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

    Thanks for this! We don’t go through avocados very quickly, and I don’t buy them unless there on sale which means we rarely ever eat them. Good to know they can be frozen!

    I love avocados! I’m jealous of your sale price as I live in Pittsburgh, where avocados rarely get below $2 each unless they are tiny or going bad. :-( But I will keep these freezing instructions in mind in case I ever see a sale.

    I never knew avocados could be frozen! I definitely want to do this when I can catch them on sale. We love to spread it on our sandwiches. And with avocados typically being so expensive I hate to waste them! Great, great tip!

    Where is the update to this post? I’d like to know what you’ve made with the frozen avocados (anything besides guac?) and how it came out.

      I haven’t updated it yet. I should do that! I’ve made guacamole only with the frozen avocados and it’s quite tasty as long as I didn’t overdo it with the lime juice concentrate. Too much of that lime juice is really overpowering and one batch had way too much of it. Otherwise, the texture is good, the avocados taste good, and seems to me they turn brown as normal. I’d love to hear what other people who have tried this think, too!

    Yay! I love avacado. At my lacal HEB they are three for a dollar right now. I always buy three at a time and can’t ever seem to finish them before they go bad. I really need to try this before the season is over.
