Healthy New Year

I have lots of New Year’s resolutions. I make them in my head every year, but I rarely write them down and so I don’t have a very good track record of actually accomplishing them, which is why the cartoon above really cracks me up! This year, I’m writing them down in the hopes they will inspire greater action! I’ll be writing several posts on all of my goals, but these are the top five in the HEALTH category! :-)

1. Find sources of local meat (pork & chicken)
– On my to-do list for a very long time has been to buy better meat. I do have a great source of beef, but I still buy chicken and pork at the grocery store. In 2012, I am finding local pork and chicken! I’ve seen several signs for Amish meat while driving through Kalona and I’m looking through the website Local Harvest to see what I can find, too. Local Harvest is a great place to start if you want to incorporate farm fresh food into your own life.

2. Gardening – I have a lot of gardening goals this year. Unfortunately, my garden did not do that well in 2011. I have learned from some of my mistake. For instance, as nice as it was to garden in the shade, my garden is moving to a new, sunny spot in 2012. :-) I also learned that it is not a good idea to plant a garden over walnut tree roots.

Walnut trees emit a toxic chemical called juglone that is very hard on tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, peppers, and eggplants – all veggies I love to plant in my garden. My new spot better be walnut root free! We only have about 100 walnut trees on our property, so it might be easier said than done. I have already ordered my 2012 seed catalog from Seed Savers and am excited to begin planning out my new and improved 2012 garden!

I’ll also be planting an orchard in 2012. I am so excited to receive my shipment of fruit trees from Trees of Antiquity. Another gardening goal will be to learn about caring for an orchard to keep those trees alive!

3. Continue to walk to local errands - A continued goal will be to keep walking to local errands! This is a great goal for my health and also to reduce gasoline consumption and fossil fuel emissions. I started walking more often back in the fall for International Walk to School Day and it’s been very nice for my back, my waistline, and is helping keep toxins out of our already dirty Iowa air!

4. Grow my blog – Another goal is to grow my blog. I love blogging

    Yay for number 5!!!!

    I’m a sucker for new year’s resolutions. I’ve even scrapbooked them. I fail nearly every year and make virtually the same ones each year. LOL Still like it though. But that’s on my post-Christmas list of things to do….
